What we left behind but will never forget

Saying goodbye is always hard and it is even harder when you know you won’t see your family and friends for a long period of time.

Today we said goodbye to Colombia again, after a two weeks vacation in our loved country. It feels like the first time when we left seven years ago.

Looking for a better future, we started our journey towards a new life in Sweden and we left behind a lot of things that we will never forget and we would like to share a few of them with you.

Delicious food

Colombian food is the most delicious food in the World (at least for us ?). We didn’t think we would miss the food that much! Every time we visit Colombia we try to eat everything we can and get back to Sweden with a couple of kilos more.

“Home made food is the best” some people say… and in this case it is totally true! Ajiaco, bandeja paisa, sanchoco, calentado, mojarra, plátano, bagre, tamal, buñuelo, almojábana, sobrebarriga, among others, make the meal time the most enjoyable part of the day.

These are some of the dishes we tried this time, please don’t get too hungry!

Beautiful landscapes

Mountains everywhere! Bogotá (capital of Colombia) is surrounded by beautiful mountains. Monserrate is one of the most known, with a hot canelazo and a delicious arepa, you can enjoy a perfect view of the center and south part of the city.

Colombia has it all in terms of landscapes: beautiful beaches, amazing waterfalls, powerful rivers, peaceful lakes, incredible deserts and even a little bit of snow, all within a few hours by car or air, basically you can reach any weather whenever you want.

Family and friends

People in Colombia is catalogued as one of the happiest people in the world (even with all the internal conflicts in the country). The happiness and the kindness of the people fill your heart with love and makes you forget all the problems for a moment.

Parents, grandparents, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunties, cousins and all the in-laws are always there to help you, guide you, make you laugh and sometimes even annoying you, but at the end, they are your family and you love them.

Our friends… how to forget them! Maybe we don’t talk or see them very often but they are always in our minds and hearts. When we meet them after a long time is like the time haven’t passed. So many stories to share, laughs and memories that makes you feel young again.

This is definitely what makes the goodbyes so difficult, you are not alone in this world but you can feel very lonely when you are away, isn’t it?

What we won’t miss that much…

Traffic, cars and lots of motorcycles. Impossible to move around without getting stuck in a traffic line. A journey that should take 20 minutes can take you more than an hour. Public transportation is not very good, it has improved… yes, but there is still a lot to do to get a decent service. Lots and lots of holes on the streets make any trip feels like a rollercoaster.

Noise and mess. Remember, we told you that people in Colombia is happy? Well, that is one of the factors that contributes to the high level of noise and mess. Everywhere you go, there is music, car horns, people screaming, noises of building construction, sirens and a lot more help to the noise pollution.

Well, that’s all for now. We just wanted to share with you a little bit of what we left some years ago when we decided to start our new adventure in Sweden.

One last thing…

  • Have you left your country? What is that thing you miss the most?
  • Are you thinking about leaving your country? What do you think you will miss the most?

Please share with us, we would like to hear it!

Hello, Thank you for this post. I always wanted to visit Columbia. But, I do know there is like you say conflict. Is it safe for an American to travel there?

People always have a bad impression of Americans but honestly, we just want to live our lives like everyone else.

That’s awesome you live in Sweden. I hear it has a nice culture there. Is there a good amount of Columbians living there?

Are you assimilating to their culture?

It must have been hard to leave your country and relatives. Do you think you will ever go back to live again?

    Thanks
    Tim

Thx Tim! Everyone can visit Colombia but we do recommend to read and ask around which places are safe to go because there are some places where you shouldn’t even think about it. Colombia is beautiful and it is a country worth visiting.

Swedish culture is very different to our own culture but we like it.

Going back to live in Colombia…not sure, not the first option right now but you never know, right?

Very nice Post. Yes, it’s always a very scaring to leave the security of the known for the unknown. It’s a great thing we all like travel though otherwise no one would be any where. My question is this the only destination you’re going to be advertising the site set for or will there be more? Either way it sounds great. Keep up the great work and I’ll see you down the line.

Thx! Traveling is one of the best pleasures in life. It is the best way to experience other cultures and learn from other people.
Regarding your question, yes, this site will be focused on Sweden mostly.

Oh my goodness the pictures of the food look so good! I’ve never moved a long distance, but I have a friend that has moved to the US from Germany and she says the food is one of the things she misses the most as well. It must be because that’s the most common thing to socialize over.
